Walton, Jaywick: Landmark proposals in bid to attract tourism

From the archive, first published Wednesday 16th Nov 2005.

Two multi-million pound landmarks could be developed off the Essex coast if major new proposals get the green light.

The projects were unveiled today by the East of England Development Agency (EEDA) and involve both Jaywick and Walton. At Jaywick, the plan is a 21st century pier, dive centre and tidal lido.

At Walton, it is hoped to build a steel offshore sculpture to commemorate the Church of All Saints, lost to the sea in the 18th century.

Feasibility studies, costing £150,000 for each site, have been carried out. The next stage will be going out to consultation over the schemes, which could provide a huge boost to visitor facilities and attractions.

The locations have been kept a closely-guarded secret and only just revealed.
