Walton: 75,000 extra visitors claim

From the archive, first published Thursday 15th Feb 2007.

A landmark sculpture at Walton could attract an extra 75,000 visitors a year to see the artwork rising out of the sea.

This is the figure German architects Anne Niemann and Johannes Ingrisch predict if the project goes ahead.

The arts-led Lost Town project aims to build a series of sunken tubes into the seabed in the shape of a church.

It is designed to commemorate churches lost on the east coast of England as a result of coastal erosion which is design to raise the profile of the region.

The polished pylons, with an 80ft high tower, would be sited 800 metres offshore north east of Walton.
